Digital Products Guide

"Digital products" is the marketplace's everything drawer: software licenses, streaming subscriptions, game keys, ebooks, templates, gift cards. The listings look unrelated, but they share one trait — you're buying access rights, not an account, and the fine print of those rights is where buyers get hurt. A Windows key and a Netflix profile fail in completely different ways, and this guide covers both.

Know which of the four you're buying

  • Keys / licenses. A code you redeem (Windows, Office, games). The key types matter enormously: retail keys transfer between machines; OEM keys are tied to one motherboard; volume / KMS keys are meant for organizations and can be deactivated in bulk. A $5 "lifetime" Windows key is almost always volume-licensed — it works until Microsoft kills the batch.
  • Subscriptions on shared accounts. Netflix profiles, Spotify family slots, YouTube Premium invites. Cheap because the cost is split; fragile because the account owner controls everything.
  • Upgrades to your own account. The seller upgrades your existing account (Spotify Premium on your email, for example). More durable than shared logins — but verify the upgrade actually sticks past the first billing cycle.
  • Files and templates. Ebooks, Notion templates, presets. One-time delivery, no ongoing dependency — the lowest-risk corner of the category. Check the file list and format before paying.

What to check before you buy

  • Region. Game keys and gift cards are frequently region-locked (a RU/CIS Steam key won't activate on a US account; some keys need VPN activation in a specific country). The listing must state the region — if it doesn't, ask.
  • Activation proof. For keys: ask whether it's been tested, and whether the seller guarantees first-time activation. For subscriptions: log in and check the plan page yourself.
  • Duration and renewal. "1 year" from when — purchase, or activation? For account-based subscriptions, check the actual renewal date in settings.
  • Upgrade vs. shared. For streaming: is it a profile on a shared account, or an upgrade applied to your account? Profiles get kicked when the owner changes the password; upgrades survive.
  • Refund/replacement terms. Digital goods can't be "returned," so the warranty is everything. Get the replacement window in writing before paying.

Warranty expectations

Keys: replacement guarantee on failed activation (usually 24–72 hours to report). Short subscriptions (1-month): warranty roughly matching the duration. "Lifetime" keys: understand this means "lifetime of the key batch," and reputable sellers offer free replacement keys when one dies. What warranties don't cover: you activating a region-locked key in the wrong region after being told the region.

Common scams

  • Already-redeemed keys. The oldest scam in the book. Mitigation: buy from sellers with key-specific review history, and test immediately — never sit on a key for weeks.
  • Volume keys sold as retail. Works for months, then dies in a batch deactivation. If the price is 90% below retail, it's volume.
  • Shared-account password changes. Your Netflix profile vanishes when the account owner changes the password and doesn't tell you. Prefer upgrade-to-your-account offers for anything you actually use daily.
  • Gift card balance fraud. Cards bought with stolen payment methods get zeroed when the fraud is caught. Suspiciously discounted gift cards are the tell.

The listings worth your money state the exact key type or subscription model, the region, the duration with a start point, and the replacement terms. Four facts, up front, no evasions — that's the whole test. And test your purchase the day it arrives, not the day you need it: a key that fails six months after delivery, outside every warranty window, is a lesson that costs exactly what you paid for it — and it's an avoidable one.
